Outdoor products manufacturer Coleman has released a wind-up lantern called the StormBeam
You recharge the built-in NiMH battery by turning the dynamo handle that folds up under the base - one minute of cranking results in 15 minutes of light on the high setting. You can recharge your mobile phone with it as well: the top cap of the lantern holds six of the most common phone adaptors.
This is practical when camping but also during power outages and other emergencies, when the built-in FM radio with channel scan and adjustable volume may come in useful too (though AM may be better during emergencies).
The 0.7W LED light is bright enough for most uses, draws minimal current and never needs replacing.
The lantern retails for $69.99. For more information, visit www.colemanaustralia.com.au
